by | Aug 1, 2022

Barnwood Bowling Club are celebrating their centenary, and Farr and Farr are celebrating 40 years of business this year! This presents us with a fantastic chance to celebrate the fact that Farr and Farr are sponsors of Barnwood Bowling Club too.

Barnwood Bowling Club

Barnwood Bowling Club entertains a number of touring sides each season, reflecting the club’s hospitality and the excellent standard of the green there, frequently described as ‘the best in Gloucestershire’ and further afield. The club now proudly boasts a number of superb facilities and with an ample amount of parking for coaches and cars.

The green there has been used for Gloucestershire’s Middleton Cup matches and in 2012 it was used as a Middleton Cup Quarter Final ground, and also for various other county games! The green has pleasant surrounds which include patio areas and flower beds with seating and tables.

History

A bit of backstory behind the Barnwood Bowling Club! The club was initially established in 1919 with a green at the pub The Wagon and Horses. A number of seasons were enjoyed until the green was then required for various other purposes.

In the Autumn of 1921 a meeting was convened between a number of gentlemen which resulted in the forming of what is now Barnwood Bowling and Tennis Ground Company Ltd. and to enable the land to be purchased, where shares would then be issued, making it a public trading company.

The first annual meeting would take place at Barnwood School on February 21st 1922. The ground that is now our premises was purchased from a member of the existing club. To ensure a reasonable playing surface for the grounds, negotiations with what was then the Gloucester and Gaslight Company would result in turfs being cut up from the banks of Berkeley Canal, and then shipped by barge to Gloucester.

The original pavilion here without the dressing rooms were originally two British Army huts that were purchased from the government War Office, and were used during the First World War as hospital wards.

Barnwood Bowling Club then celebrated our 50th anniversary and received recognition from both the English Bowling Association and Civic Dignitaries. In November 1975 the club applied for a loan and grant to build a new clubhouse from Gloucester Council’s Leisure Committee, who ultimately turned it down. The council’s Chairman regretted turning down the application but could not help at the time due to the financial climate.

In 1976, a second application was made, and the council granted us a loan of £4500, with the actual cost of the clubhouse being £9100! The Grand Official Opening of our new facility then took place on 11th April 2015 at Barnwood Bowling Club. The new extension, which is to the right of the main clubhouse, is almost twice as large as the one that it replaced and provides facilities for ladies changing room, disabled toilet, men’s and women’s toilets, bar store and store area.
